Promises are made to bring you closer to someone, but can tear you apart from others. They fold a connotation of being something meaningful, not meant to be broken; but in my experiences, most are broken. The power behind a promise comes with so much responsibility that it can overwhelm someone, losing it's meaning as something provate and eventually breaks out from its secret. It's a lot harder to keep a promise than to break one.

A promise these days are taken lightly; taken for granted in fact. They do not have the same meaning as people just say it to say it. I think you are right when you say "it;s a lot harder to keep a promise than break one". Promises are not meant to be broken; they are promises for a reason.

By giving a word like promise, such a serious nature, it almost ensures the breaking of it. Much like rules and laws, things that are intended to not be broken, and inhibit action, in most cases are made to be broken on some level. While promises are indeed taken too lightly, maybe people should spend less time worrying about keeping them, and doing things for themselves.

In the bible, Jesus says "Let your yes be yes, and your no be no." God often warns against the making of a promise because He understands that as human beings we are bound to break them, but also because He holds us to our promises. To break a promise is, essentially, a sin. Sadly this sin is often committed by people because they don't understand the severity or a promise and think little about breaking one. Whenever I am about to make a promise, I always think first about the story of Jephthah. When Jephthath was preparing for war, he prayed to God for victory over the Ammonites and, in exchange for victory, he promised that he would sacrifice the first thing that he saw upon his return home. It just so happened that the first thing Japhthah saw when he returned home was his only child, his daughter, who had run out to meet him. Because he had made a promise to God, he was held to his own foolish promise and had to sacfrice his own child. I always remember this story to remember that a promise is a promise, so always think before you make one.

I absolutely agree with this post; it reminds me of the poem that we read in class about promises. Promises are a serious matter that is actually taken very lightly by many, including myself. Reading Rebekah's post allowed me to look at the topic in a whole different light and opened my eyes to something I never knew!

i agree with this post. promises can be taken so lightly when it is not a light topic. people should understand the importance of something that bonds people together which are promises.
